Sydney McGarr

Hi! I’m Sydney McGarr, a journalist currently completing my senior year at Colorado College.

I am the Editor-in-Chief of Colorado College’s independent student-run newspaper, The Catalyst. Previously, I worked as Head News Editor and Arts and Entertainment Editor. During my time at The Catalyst, I’ve covered everything from a car crashing into a local grocery store to student outrage over a housing controversy. You can find my clips from The Catalyst here.

I cover the state of student journalism for The Student Press Report, a national news desk covering student media and journalism education in higher ed. My most recently published piece, “Journalism students know the industry is struggling. They’re choosing to enter it anyway,” was republished by The Poynter Institute and featured in the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism newsletter.

This summer, I worked as a staff writer at Bucket List Community News in Denver, where I covered politics, city council and local businesses. Read my published work here.

I have received numerous journalism awards this year, including The Denver Press Club Daymon Runyon Award, a top scholarship from The Colorado Society of Professional Journalists and the Ruth Barton Award for journalism at Colorado College.
